Years ago, on one of our visits to my husband's family in Zealand, we visited Rungstedlund. When we were in Nairo...Out of Africa is a treasure! When we were in Nairobi, we didn't live far from the Karen Blixen house (which is in Karen, actually). I used to go there on lazy afternoons with a book to read somewhere interesting on the grounds. In the movie, the scene where the servants line up and welcome Karen Blixen, they're saying in Kiswahili, "Welcome, Madame Nothing," an example of the Kenyan sense of humor, not a mean-spirited thing. My housekeeper cracked up when he heard it. If you can get it, the movie (based on the book by the same name, "White Mischief," is a fairly accurate accounting of how they lived. Exiled by parents with tons of money, they were, er, naughty. One of my favorite books is "West by East," the story of Beryl Markham's solo flight across the Atlantic. She was in the White Mischief crows and a rival of Karen Blixen. Anyway, we also belonged to the Muthaiga Club featured in the movie with the New Year's Eve scene. One such time, I was allowed to enter (as that's the only time women were) and couldn't believe how small the bar was.

Read your previous blog: Hope you've recovered from the flu and it's nice to know you've got your groove back since the kids have left. I guess that's how my mother felt when I breezed off but hadn't a clue. With KB's book in hand and a G&T by my side I was completely absorbed by the sounds of Africa, helped enormously by the beautiful creatures loping around the grounds outside the windows. I haven't seen the film, but spurred on immediately placed an order with Amazon - that would be something I would miss enormously if living in Vietnam, speedy Amazon delivery! I wanted to recommend a book to you: "Princess Remembers: Memoirs of the Maharani of Jaipur" an amazing read which captured a different age. I mean, travelling with elephants on your family train up into the mountains - blows your mind! Hope you are feeling better. I can not say that for all movies made c. 1985. What a movie. What a location. But it was the flight that 'Robert' took 'Meryl' on to show her his 'special place' that really did it for my mother - because my father often took her to see something 'special' that he had discovered on his daily travels. I carry this memory with me in my daily life and also try to find something 'special' every day. Thank you for reminding me.
