Grace Notes

I am finding more and more these days,
that I like to have a book or two by my side,
to keep me company, to set me straight.

It could also be that I tend to sit in so much
traffic these days that it makes the minutes and hours
pass by sweetly.

One of those books, was given to me by a dear friend.
It was a parting gift to remember my time living in Australia.
It has been several years and I still think of her every time I turn a page.

The author of the book is an Australian, Kate Llewellyn.
 The book...
Playing with Water
A story of a garden

It's quite simple, she buys a house in a coastal town,
and creates a garden. As she sets roots in her new community
her plantings are following suit.

Kate Llewellyn is a gifted writer and
manages to transport me from the hum drum of a
traffic snarl to feeling grass underfoot, dirt on my fingertips
and the heady fragrance of Australian flowers in the moonlight.

When I sit and read, I take pen to paper. I do it with all the books I love.
A scribble here and there to remember my favourite passages.
I like to be able to find those few special words at a moment's notice.

Houses are like marriages......

A barefoot good Samaritan and a chocolate cake....

What glorious days are these....

How about you, do you have a book or two
to keep you company?

  2. I always have a book to keep me company. I am a writer in books as well. I am happy to find someone else who writes in their books. Sounds like a book to put on my never ending book list. Bonnie

  3. Books are my friends, my company, my solace and my comfort, my joy and my entertainment. I have so many books that I love and oddly enough I do the same thing that you do, I make notes to myself in the margins. I love the book, The Art of Simplicity, I learned so much from Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl and Night by Elie Weisel. I will read everything and anything.

I will have to take a look at your favorite book, it looks so interesting!

    Take care, Elizabeth

  5. Hello Jeanne
This sounds like an excellent read and I also love when the author includes recipes.
I remember reading Nora Ephron's Heartburn and I have cooked practically all the recipes in this book, the pasta is one of my standbys.
    My best
    Helen xx

  8. Yes, I'm always reading several books at the same time. Well, not literally at the same time, but you know what I mean. I also write in my books. There are so many wonderful passages and I want to remember them.

  10. Dear Jeanne,

Thank you for your sweet comment. I'm so glad that the coffee arrived! And happy that you liked both coffee and postcard. I hope you will visit Rungstedlund one day - you will love it!
Favourite books? Oh, the list will be long. Right now we're reading The Great Gatsby and both I and the students love it. Next: Hemingway! I'm sure he will lead to some discussions between the girls and boys - he always does:-)

  11. There are some books which almost become friends, their pages thumbed and worn from re-reading. One such book for me is Frenchman's Creek. I love it.

  12. I love marking up my books, too.

Just finished 100 Names for Love . . . about a woman's journey to help her husband recover from a stroke.

    Fondly,
    Glenda

  13. Lovely post. I had never thought of making notations in my books. A good idea as I usually have to scour through page upon page to go back to something I want to re-read.
    Thanks for the tip :-)

  14. Sounds like a great book. I tend to read several books at the same time. Like you, I mark my books, but I just underline main thoughts so that when I pick up one of the books I'm reading, I read what was underlined to reacquaint myself with it and to make sure I'm not confusing it with another book. Does that make sense?

  15. Hi Jeanne,
I don't usually carry a book...but I think it's time for me to start. And I really love the idea of finding grace notes in the everyday.
I look at the postcards you sent me every day (those are grace notes in every one of my days).
    Hugs,
    Becky

  17. I am never without a book. If I were a spy and was captured, the best way to torture me would be to deprive me of books. I'd tell all in a second!

  18. Jeanne, yes always. My Jane Austen and Barbara Pym novels are always within reach and they never fail to soothe. This books looks quite wonderful and I will have to look into it. Happy reading!

  19. Hi Jeanne.....this book does look wonderful. I am always reading something......sometimes it takes a while to finish....and if we are traveling....we often listen to books on tape. It makes the time go by and we learn something in the process.

    Hugs sweet lady,

    Jo
