Tahilla Farm, Tarzan, Mr. H and a Birthday Wish
A few months ago I wrote about the movie inspiration
I have been drawing on for Tahilla Farm.
Nancy Meyers came to mind with films such as..
You were all unanimous,
I had made good choices…
But…
Mr. H read my post and went quiet...I could tell something was coming.
He said: "Actually, I had a few movies of my own in mind."
I said: "Ok, but please tell me the list does not involve Tarzan,
I have no interest in living in a treehouse.."
He said: "Better than that, the movies I have in mind for Tahilla Farm are…."
I said: "You do realise we own an antique farmhouse don’t you?"
He said: "We are renovating…let’s have fun."
I was: SPEECHLESS
I like to look for the positive in every situation
and decided to think it through rationally, (as you do)
starting with the female leads in his movie suggestions.
Catherine Deneuve in Indochine |
Meryl Streep in Out of Africa |
Virgina McKenna in Born Free |
It was looking promising..except for a slight
detour with a vampire
Peta Wilson in The League of Extraordinary Gentelmen |
and I was baffled by The Addams Family..
but then again, maybe not. Afer all, we do have Fred
as a result of one of Mr. H's expeditions.
It has an Addams family quality to it.
Carolyn Jones in The Addams Family |
After 27 years, life is anything but dull with Mr. H
and I can tell you it has been a journey trying to work out
where we are going with Tahilla Farm.
The latest "discussion" involved the master bedroom window.
I often wonder what our architect must think of us…
Mrs. H suggested the bedroom window in the movie...
Something's Gotta Give |
Mr. H suggested the window from the ship in the movie..
Master and Commander |
Our builder mentioned the challenge of a curve.
The end result…
we just received the price to build our fantasy window.
We are back to the drawing board.
Maybe that treehouse isn't looking so bad after all?
Maureen O'Hara and Johnny Weissmuller ( 1932) Tarzan the Ape Man |
I am writing this post by way of Tahilla Farm in New Hampshire and sending Happy Birthday wishes to Mr. H in Vietnam. Our travels often revolve around his birthday which means he often spends it on his own. This one is for you Mr. H…I have just the spot for that treehouse! ;)
Please join me in wishing
Mr. H
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
xxx
The post where it all began
Happy Birthday Mr. H!
ReplyDeleteYour lists is fantastic.
As for the windows...the ship for sure with a napping platform. I hope you find a way.
And consider adding a movable ceiling section to house a mini observatory for stargazing either there at the window bank or over the bed. Somehow, as an extra, have the glass thermal enough for snow to melt so you can see what it feels like to sleep cozy when its snowing, sort of like a glamping nook indoors. You won't need a tree house then.
I love it Maywyn and I know Mr. H will love the idea of a movable ceiling even more. The stargazing from here is wonderful…just gettting a little bit closer would be magical. Great idea!
DeleteThx you! xx
Happy Birthday to Mr. H!! I hope that he had a pleasant celebration even though you are away.
ReplyDeleteI have to say Jeanne that I loved your positive approach to the Adams Family movie, the others I love an could see a few features added to the farm that would invoke the spirit of adventure from the others.
I am looking forward to updates on the farm, I have a feeling it is all going to be incredible!
Have a wonderful week and enjoy every minute at the farm.
Elizabeth
Thank you Elizabeth, in true Vietnamese spirit, he received seven beautiful orchid arrangements, an enormous birthday cake and a painting of him done by a local artist…looking Vietnamese. Love it! We will celebrate when he returns in a few weeks…in American style. ;) xx
DeleteHappy birthday, Mr. H.! As I interpret the moviescapes above, Mr. H. would like a Folly. That is a grand tradition, but perhaps not applicable to an entire House:).
ReplyDeleteA folly is perfect Lisa…there is always the carriage house. Better yet, constructing one in the woods. A good activity for us when we hit retirement. Reading in a folly. Love the idea! ;) xx
DeleteA very Happy Birthday to the dapper Mr. H.!
ReplyDeleteI love both movie inspiration lists. Born Free had an enormous impact on me as a little girl, so I can totally understand that one and would respectfully suggest Swiss Family Robinson be added to his list, if only for the organ room alone. And Honestly, when other girls were swooning over Robert Redford in Out of Africa, all I wanted was that farmhouse. I actually did a client's sitting room in that gorgeous linen floral the very next year. All your ideas bode very well for Tahilla Farm! Happy Sunday to you both! xo
Thank you Pamela…I once took photos while watching the movie with the same idea in mind. We will have a mix of old and new when we are done. The Out of Africa theme would work well in the old section of the house…lots of wood and a big fireplace. Best wishes for a wonderful week…xx
DeleteHappy birthday Mr. H......actually, I think his ideas are really great since OUT OF AFRICA is my favorite movie of all time....I know...I Know you own an antique farmhouse....but you CAN MAKE it any way you want it because it is YOURS!! LOL LOL

Jo
So true Jo!! xx :)
DeleteHappy Birthday Mr H, I'm going with your choice of Out of Africa. My absolute favourite film, I long for a farmhouse like that, Jane x
ReplyDeleteThank you Jane…I know he will be thrilled to read your comment! ;) xx
DeleteHappy Birthday Mr H.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy Tahilla Farm and the planning. Whatever window you choose may the view be spectacular.
Helen
Working on it Helen…it involves "Martha" and she is looking pretty grand. ;) xx
DeleteSending Happy Birthday wishes to Mr. H! Ahhh....the "pleasures" of building/renovating a home, lol. It's quite amazing about the different ideas that pop out during a discussion about changing a room. I think I'd be quite happy with some of the rooms done in an "Out of Africa" style. On the blog "Hooked on Houses" there's a post with interior shots of Karen Blixen's home....the style could be right at home in NH, especially the rattan furniture shown on the porch.....oh my yes! http://hookedonhouses.net/2010/03/22/karen-blixens-house-in-out-of-africa/ I really laughed when you showed the ship's window....a compromise might be a straight bumped-out window with a window seat. As for the treehouse, it's definitely a possibility with these guys: http://www.treehouses.org/backyard.php Only 15 minutes down the road from you! Oh the possibilities!!! Enjoy the rest of this beautiful Sunday Jeanne!
ReplyDeleteRoxane…you are a sweetheart, thx for all the links. You always give me the best ideas..I am off to explore. Thank you!! ;) xx
DeleteI vote for "Out of Africa", an all time favorite. Happy Birthday Mr. H!
ReplyDeleteMe too Paula ….I think your house is already there. It's why we all love it so much. Just need the landing strip for the airplane. I think Swift could manage that one for you. :) xx
DeleteHappy Birthday Mr H! Out of Africa is one of my favourite movies. Catherine Deneuve in Indochine was just s of perfect and beautiful. So is Meryl Streep in Out of Africa. Happy Weekend Jeanne.
ReplyDeleteI hear you Pamela…the list goes on and on. Best wishes for a Wonderful Week! xx ;)
DeleteYour Mr. H has just as good as taste as you do Jeanne. Hope his b'day was a pleasant one. With your beautiful views any large picture window would work...but I do love the character of the ones shown.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sue..we will get it to work one way or another. I am curious to see what we end up with, I think we all are. ;) xx
DeleteHappy Birthday Mr. H! Out of Africa is one of my favorite movies. I never get tired of watching it & I always cry! Also love the house in Something's Gotta Give.
ReplyDeleteMe too!…I think I manage to cry in all the movies listed..except when the vampire does her work in The League of Extraordinary Gentelmen… :) xx
DeleteHappy Birthday to Mr. H! I have to say that I love the idea of using movies for your home inspiration Jeanne, and the inclusion of The Adams Family made me smile. Sounds like your hubby is a lot of fun :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you decide.
xo
Leslie
p.s. when I was a little girl I wanted to live in a treehouse after I saw read Swiss Family Robinson
Leslie…if we build an adult tree house, which is very possible, I will be sure to let you know so we can plan a rendezvoux. I will have a copy of Swiss Family Robinson waiting...xx
DeleteHappy birthday, Mr. H. Have a wonderful week and enjoy every minute at the farm.
ReplyDeleteLiving Room Tips for You
Thank you Laura…and for the "masculine decorating tips". ;)
DeleteDear Mr H - sending wishes for a most excellent year ahead, yes, adventure is certainly on the platform but may it be joined by health and a whole lot of joy. I actually quite like your movie choices as they are all visually stunning productions (Jeanne, you have to admoit that is true)! Yes, definitely the Addams Family as well...for gothic is just another form of Baroque... :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday wishes to Viet Nam. Loved reading this post. I had to go back and read your previous post as I have been away and am needing to catch-up. We had a "bow" window in a previous home and I loved it. I know whatever you decide it will be fabulous. Enjoy the process and your time at the farm. Have a great holiday week. B.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeanne, I think you two are a match made in heaven and I think of heaven to be filled with laughter and fun. I think with you two its never a dull moment and who wants dull! Your post had me laughing out loud.
ReplyDeleteWishing Mr. H a very joyful birthday and many..many happy returns.
Cheers!
Ooh I like the way he thinks! and that whole British Colonial feel from Out of Africa will help tie together many of your worldly souvenirs!
ReplyDeleteAnd I forgot to add a very happy birthday to mr. h!
DeleteThe Adams family spin proves that Mr. H has a sense of humor. Nancy Myers style is so similar to that of the set decorator for Out of Africa...Mr. H is all over it I think!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Mr. H. Sounds like you are having fun in keeping Mrs. H on her toes with your suggestions for the design of Tahilla Farm! Hope it has been a wonderful summer retreat for you. Have a safe trip back to Vietnam.
ReplyDeleteHappy, happy celebration of your Day of Life, Mr. H.
ReplyDeleteMay the days at Tahilla Farm be filled with great explorations and discoveries as you make plans to have this wonderful home be just what you and Jeanne desire. Enjoy this summer of imagining and enjoying time together. Kristin
I have to say...I watched each and every Tarzan movie as a child. Sunday morning absolutely meant watching Tarzan and then rushing to be ready for church. I used to try so hard to imitate his Tarzan call and I desperately wanted to be Jane...and to have a chimp...and to swing from trees!!
ReplyDeleteI love your window Jeanne but I am sure that, whatever you choose, you will succeed in creating a wonderful living space.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Mr H. Is Tahillia Farm going to be the permanent residence eventually? If so it definitely needs the treehouse xx
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Mr H! A post like this makes me wonder if I should acquire a Mr Q ;)
