Tahilla Farm, Tarzan, Mr. H and a Birthday Wish
A few months ago I wrote about the movie inspiration
I have been drawing on for Tahilla Farm.
Nancy Meyers came to mind with films such as..
You were all unanimous,
I had made good choices…
But…
Mr. H read my post and went quiet...I could tell something was coming.
He said: "Actually, I had a few movies of my own in mind."
I said: "Ok, but please tell me the list does not involve Tarzan,
I have no interest in living in a treehouse.."
He said: "Better than that, the movies I have in mind for Tahilla Farm are…."
I said: "You do realise we own an antique farmhouse don’t you?"
He said: "We are renovating…let’s have fun."
I was: SPEECHLESS
I like to look for the positive in every situation
and decided to think it through rationally, (as you do)
starting with the female leads in his movie suggestions.

It was looking promising..except for a slight
detour with a vampire

and I was baffled by The Addams Family..
but then again, maybe not. Afer all, we do have Fred
as a result of one of Mr. H's expeditions.
It has an Addams family quality to it.

After 27 years, life is anything but dull with Mr. H
and I can tell you it has been a journey trying to work out
where we are going with Tahilla Farm.
The latest "discussion" involved the master bedroom window.
I often wonder what our architect must think of us…

Our builder mentioned the challenge of a curve.
The end result…
we just received the price to build our fantasy window.
We are back to the drawing board.
Maybe that treehouse isn't looking so bad after all?

I am writing this post by way of Tahilla Farm in New Hampshire and sending Happy Birthday wishes to Mr. H in Vietnam. Our travels often revolve around his birthday which means he often spends it on his own. This one is for you Mr. H…I have just the spot for that treehouse! ;)

As for the windows...the ship for sure with a napping platform. I hope you find a way.
And consider adding a movable ceiling section to house a mini observatory for stargazing either there at the window bank or over the bed. Somehow, as an extra, have the glass thermal enough for snow to melt so you can see what it feels like to sleep cozy when its snowing, sort of like a glamping nook indoors. You won't need a tree house then.
I love it Maywyn and I know Mr. H will love the idea of a movable ceiling even more. The stargazing from here is wonderful…just gettting a little bit closer would be magical. Great idea!

ReplyDeleteI have to say Jeanne that I loved your positive approach to the Adams Family movie, the others I love an could see a few features added to the farm that would invoke the spirit of adventure from the others.
I am looking forward to updates on the farm, I have a feeling it is all going to be incredible!

Thank you Elizabeth, in true Vietnamese spirit, he received seven beautiful orchid arrangements, an enormous birthday cake and a painting of him done by a local artist…looking Vietnamese. Love it! We will celebrate when he returns in a few weeks…in American style. ;) xx
DeleteHappy birthday, Mr. H.! As I interpret the moviescapes above, Mr. H. would like a Folly. That is a grand tradition, but perhaps not applicable to an entire House:).

Born Free had an enormous impact on me as a little girl, so I can totally understand that one and would respectfully suggest Swiss Family Robinson be added to his list, if only for the organ room alone. And Honestly, when other girls were swooning over Robert Redford in Out of Africa, all I wanted was that farmhouse. I actually did a client's sitting room in that gorgeous linen floral the very next year. All your ideas bode very well for Tahilla Farm! Happy Sunday to you both! xo
Thank you Pamela…I once took photos while watching the movie with the same idea in mind. We will have a mix of old and new when we are done. The Out of Africa theme would work well in the old section of the house…lots of wood and a big fireplace. Best wishes for a wonderful week…xx

DeleteSending Happy Birthday wishes to Mr. H! Ahhh....the "pleasures" of building/renovating a home, lol. It's quite amazing about the different ideas that pop out during a discussion about changing a room. I think I'd be quite happy with some of the rooms done in an "Out of Africa" style. On the blog "Hooked on Houses" there's a post with interior shots of Karen Blixen's home....the style could be right at home in NH, especially the rattan furniture shown on the porch.....oh my yes! http://hookedonhouses.net/2010/03/22/karen-blixens-house-in-out-of-africa/ I really laughed when you showed the ship's window....a compromise might be a straight bumped-out window with a window seat. DeleteDear Mr H - sending wishes for a most excellent year ahead, yes, adventure is certainly on the platform but may it be joined by health and a whole lot of joy. I actually quite like your movie choices as they are all visually stunning productions (Jeanne, you have to admoit that is true)! Yes, definitely the Addams Family as well...for gothic is just another form of Baroque... :)

I have to say...I watched each and every Tarzan movie as a child. Sunday morning absolutely meant watching Tarzan and then rushing to be ready for church. I used to try so hard to imitate his Tarzan call and I desperately wanted to be Jane...and to have a chimp...and to swing from trees!!
