Karen Blixen...in the afternoon light

Image by me... turning pages in the afternoon light at Chateau Mango.

In the afternoon light, in the far corner of District 2 of Ho Chi Minh City,
I am thinking of Karen Blixen, also known as Isak Dinesen. My thoughts
have travelled as a result of a surprise package. One that came a great distance,
from Copenhagen, where a talented woman by the name of Carina
so kindly thought of me and Karen Blixen in the same light.

For in the package is the most beautiful book,
one that I know so many of you would enjoy.

But first...about Carina..an English teacher and a
thirty-something Copenhagener and avid fan of Oscar Wilde,
We have been fellow blogging friends from the start..
both of us writing when time permits.  Karen Blixen has been a subject
of our thoughts for some time. Carina lives close to the home
where Karen Blixen lived following her time in Africa. Carina wrote
a wonderful post about Karen Blixen here and as blog posts often do,
one thing leads to another and I wrote here
We both have Karen Blixen on our minds.

I highly recommend this book if you are able to locate it. I am sending
a special thanks by way of this post to Carina for braving the Vietnam
postal system (a procrastinating one) and sending this beautiful book.
 I am touched beyond words...
You can visit the museum sites of Karen Blixen's homes,
in Rungstedlund here and in Kenya here.

This has all inspired me to watch 'Out of Africa' tonight.
I am home with a touch of the Saigon flu..keeping myself well hydrated
with Chicken Pho, Fortnum and Mason tea and jugs of filtered water.
I just finished reuniting with Diane Keaton via 'Somethings Gotta Give'...
and what better ending to the day than with Meryl and Robert...

Take Africa, Karen Blixen...Meryl Streep, Robert Redford,
Klaus Maria Brandauer, beautiful scenery, a wonderful story,
a classic traveling wardrobe and you have magic.
An Out of Africa kind of magic....

In 1985, Out of Africa won seven Oscar's including
Best Picture, Best Writing- Screenplay, Best Music-Original Score ,
Best DirectorBest Cinematography
Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Sound.

Here a few classic Meryl moments....by way of Karen Blixen.

  1. This certainly looks like an interesting read - thanks for the recommendation. Something's Gotta Give is a favourite of mine and Out of Africa too. I may just watch these again soon especially as we are trying to stay inside and warm here in the UK.
PS I watched Rick Stein make Chicken Pho on the TV on Saturday and I'm planning to make it this week.

  4. Jeanne, I'm so sorry you're under the weather. The cold season has swept through our home recently but luckily left me unscathed. (Fingers crossed) I'm glad you've kept company with Meryl and Diane, two of my favorites. :)
Interesting that I didn't recognize the name of Karen Blixen. I enjoyed this post and I visited the lovely blog you mentioned. I shall have to return to it because it looks so intriguing.

I was thinking the same thing about the Kenya house. I just popped a bunch of photos onto my Farmhouse Pinterest board...I think you will enjoy them too. http://pinterest.com/jeannecol/farmhouse/

  8. Hello Jeanne, Out of Africa is one of my favourite movies. Karen Blixen's life was
fascinating. Merry' Streep's performance in the movie was just fantastic and the clothes were classic! Lucky you to have received that book straight from your friend in Copenhagen. Something Gotta Give is a very good and hilarious movie too. Both movies are perfect to watch when down with flu. I hope you get better soon.

Will definitely be renting it on Apple TV before the weekend is over. Almost makes me want a touch of the Saigon Flu…but then again, I'm terrified of the Alabama Flu! Bless you! 16. Both movies you can't see often enough. I adore the fashion style from M.Streep in "out of Africa" and wonder always how you can look so perfect in such a hot climate? Diane Keaton is a very elegant and natural women and both actors prove how to age in grace.

  17. I took my recently widowed mother to see Out of Africa all those years ago! What a movie. What a location. But it was the flight that 'Robert' took 'Meryl' on to show her his 'special place' that really did it for my mother - because my father often took her to see something 'special' that he had discovered on his daily travels. I carry this memory with me in my daily life and also try to find something 'special' every day. Thank you for reminding me. Nurture yourself to wellness

  18. The costumes, house, interiors and decorations in that movie are some of the best ever done in a film. I fell in love with Robert Redford because of that hair-washing scene!

Funnily enough, I've just been reading about KB too. Did you realise she had an affair with Bror's twin brother before she married Bror? Such a tragic marriage. Although some historian has found that she didn't die of syphilis, as everyone assumes. What a life. xx

    1. Agree, the movie is so well done, it is timeless. I can not say that for all movies made c. 1985. One thing that comes thru in the book mentioned here is that she lived a happy life in the end, surrounded by family and friends, her home reflected her enjoyment of life...even though it was not the best of times for her for many of those early years. xx

  22. Hi Jeanne - you reminded me of a really fantastic evening staying at the Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. With KB's book in hand and a G&T by my side I was completely absorbed by the sounds of Africa, helped enormously by the beautiful creatures loping around the grounds outside the windows. I haven't seen the film, but spurred on immediately placed an order with Amazon - that would be something I would miss enormously if living in Vietnam, speedy Amazon delivery! I wanted to recommend a book to you: "Princess Remembers: Memoirs of the Maharani of Jaipur" an amazing read which captured a different age. I mean, travelling with elephants on your family train up into the mountains - blows your mind! Hope you are feeling better. I've just had an indulgent movie moment with 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding', just lovely.

  24. Out of Africa is a treasure! When we were in Nairobi, we didn't live far from the Karen Blixen house (which is in Karen, actually). I used to go there on lazy afternoons with a book to read somewhere interesting on the grounds. In the movie, the scene where the servants line up and welcome Karen Blixen, they're saying in Kiswahili, "Welcome, Madame Nothing," an example of the Kenyan sense of humor, not a mean-spirited thing. My housekeeper cracked up when he heard it. If you can get it, the movie (based on the book by the same name, "White Mischief," is a fairly accurate accounting of how they lived. Exiled by parents with tons of money, they were, er, naughty. One of my favorite books is "West by East," the story of Beryl Markham's solo flight across the Atlantic. She was in the White Mischief crows and a rival of Karen Blixen. Anyway, we also belonged to the Muthaiga Club featured in the movie with the New Year's Eve scene. One such time, I was allowed to enter (as that's the only time women were) and couldn't believe how small the bar was.

Read your previous blog: Hope you've recovered from the flu and it's nice to know you've got your groove back since the kids have left. I guess that's how my mother felt when I breezed off but hadn't a clue. Youth!

  25. Out of Africa is one of my 'go to' films - I see something new every time I watch it. Years ago, on one of our visits to my husband's family in Zealand, we visited Rungstedlund. I'd love to go back without fidgety children - they could only think of the beach, which was our final destination that day.
Lovely post - and what a thoughtful gift from your friend.
