Update: MOG Wedding Dress #26

That's me...the little sailor girl.
I can tell by the look on my face and the pose
that I was busting to get the photo over and be on the move.
Either that or I was feeling pretty special in my outfit.
Ahhh...to be a sailor girl again.

I have been working on my mother of the groom dress
for my son's wedding which is two weeks away.

I was inspired by this wonderful photo of my grandmother
at my parent's wedding in the 1950's.

She was a vision in midnight blue and her smile says it all.

I have two wedding dress ideas on the drawing board.
One is a simple dress in a fine midnight blue silk.
Clean lines, a special necklace and earrings.
Done...it's me.

We are doing a test run, making a sample dress
so that I can see if my idea works before
setting needle and thread to the finished product.

The other idea is more of a stretch.
An asymmetrical statement jacket that is need of a dress.
It is elegant with clean lines. The dress will need
to be the subtler of the two and well balanced.

I am not a petite women so balance is everything.
It might be a long shot.
My dress maker is searching Saigon for the
right fabric and colour.

For those of you who know me...
and my love for lotus flowers.
I wonder...just wonder...
if I may be channelling lotus
flowers in this jacket.  ;)

Blooming in our garden this week...lotus flower

Speaking of colours and lotus blossoms
I also wanted to give you an update on
Chateau Mango.

We decided to stay with our original theme.
Here are the choices we were given.

Next week...
the scaffolding goes up for an army of workmen
at the ready with cans of Persian Melon.
When in Vietnam...

Leaving you with post #26 of my

and I have just one thing to say about that.
Hallelujah!!
Two more to go!

  5. Although I am very much a bright colors kinda gal, I must say the soft midnight blue silk is very enticing. Certainly meets all the specs on my color wheel. 😊 Some simple elegant jewels would be smashing with the midnight blue as well, and I'll bet REAL flowers will be a great back-drop. Do give us a preview of all; as you know, most of your readers love to opine when requested.

  8. Ooooo...such lovely choices!

I can definitely picture the blue silk with a beautiful piece of artistic jewelry...maybe silver with abalone?...or is abalone too casual for the wedding?

The lotus flower jacket sounds fabulous too! Anything asymmetrical is always slimming (having no idea what you look like, but knowing most of us want to at least look slimmer!...especially for a wedding!).

What would you feel most comfortable wearing? What do you want to be remembered in from that special day? What would look best in photos?

My tip (not that you asked, or anything) is: wear comfortable shoes. No one will ever remember your shoes, and you'll be on your feet quite a bit.

So excited to see your choice!

    1. All good tips Kate, thank you! You are so right about the shoes. I bought two different pairs and can tell already which ones I WON'T be wearing. What a difference a season makes. I tried the shoes on in a shop in Connecticut on a cold winter's day. I put them on when I returned to steamy Saigon and OUCH! Wished I had gone up 1/2 size. I should know better. ;)

  10. Hi Jeanne ---- hmmmm. I love the blue which is elegant and stylish but I wonder whether the flowered dress and jacket will suit the venue more? You haven't said what style of wedding is planned and I wonder if it is a less formal, more outdoorsy summery wedding as you are all so lucky to be able to have in warmer countries? If so may be the colourful jacket will seem more joyful? Especially if most of the party is outside during the day. The blue silk is what I would choose for a London wedding. I am certain though from everything I have seen of you that you have a very sure style and will look wonderful. As will Mr H -- is he giving his outfit much thought?! C x

  11. Dear Jeanne:
Having been the mother of the same bride twice, I know well the joyous yet slightly panicked feeling of needing to look just right. Both choices are wonderful, but I can't help agreeing with Ceri..the blue feels a bit too formal, while the lotus-like jacket and dress have just a tad more of an edge, and would be venue and climate appropriate. You might find that a removable jacket is a godsend! Certainly agree with all your fans, you'll look lovely in either.
